Buenos Aires is often referred to as the Paris of the South, and remnants of European culture are to be found throughout the city in its numerous museums and historic buildings. The locals, known as Portenos, take a very carefree approach to life, and Argentinean society is generally informal.
Getting there
Ezeiza International Airport, also referred to as Aeropuerto International Ministro Pistarini (54 11 5480 6111; www.turismo.gov.ar), is 37 kilometres from downtown and the gateway to Argentina for numerous international carriers and some domestic airlines. The majority of domestic airlines, however, use Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (54 11 4576 1111), which is just ten minutes' drive from the city centre. Regular ferry services (www.buquebus.com) operate from Colonia and Montevideo in Uruguay, and well organised buses (www.tebasa.com.ar) run to neighbouring countries.
Weather
Buenos Aires enjoys a warm and benign climate year-round. Mean temperatures in July, the coldest month, range between 3oC and 8oC, while the average during the summer is 27oC.
