The capital of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan, is most usually referred to as BSB or Bandar. Named after the Sultan's late father in 1975, it is one of the most relaxed of Asian cities, made wealthy by substantial oil reserves that make it the most prosperous part of the entire island of Borneo.

Getting there
Bandar Seri Begawan international airport (673 2 330 483; www.brunet.bn/gov/dca/fids) is just 10 kilometres north of the city centre, with links to Asia-Pacific destinations and the Middle East as well as to Europe via London and Frankfurt. Most nationalities can receive a visa on arrival (www.tourismbrunei.com/info/entry). There are also ferry and road links to neighbouring Sabah and Sarawak.

Weather
This is definitely a climate that demands lightweight clothing, and possibly some form of waterproof gear (an umbrella wards off both sun and rain) is advisable almost every day of the year. BSB tends to be tropically hot and humid, with heavy rainfall during November to March. The average temperature year round is 28oC.

Business and Finance
Though small, Brunei is one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, with crude oil and natural gas production accounting for just over half the country's GDP. The government plans to widen the economic base beyond oil and gas as well as reduce unemployment, strengthen the tourism and banking sectors and upgrade the labour force.
