Lahore, also known as the cultural capital of Pakistan, boasts a rich heritage, much of which were passed down from the Mughal Empire. The city's architecture boasts of forts and city gates as old as the 11th century, Mughal-style gardens, Victorian-style universities and public buildings built during the British reign. A rich culture, a combination of traditional and modern shopping areas and the availability of a wide variety of food make Lahore an exciting cultural experience. The city is also renowned for its historical importance in the creation of Pakistan.

With a population of 10 million, it is the second largest city in the country, and the 5th largest in South Asia. It continues to expand and progress at a remarkable pace.

Getting There
Most travellers arrive at Allama Iqbal International Airport (92 42 924 0508; www.lahoreairport.com.pk) which is served by numerous airlines as well as the national carrier, PIA (www.piac.com.pk). It is located a half hour's drive from the city centre. Alternatively, Lahore can be reached by either using the Pakistan Railway network (92 42 920 1771; www.pakrail.com) or by using the new motorway that connects Lahore to Faisalabad and the capital, Islamabad.

Weather
Lahore is a city known for extreme temperatures. In the summer, during the May to July period, the thermometer hovers between 42oC and 48oC, touching a blistering record high of 52oC in June 2007. August witnesses the start of the monsoons, with heavy rainfall lasting for days and the temperature dropping to the 25oC -30oC range. By contrast, the winter months of December, January and February are chilly, with temperatures dropping to -1oC accompanied by dense fog in the evenings.
