Warsaw — Warszawa in Polish — stands on the banks of the River Vistula, roughly half way between the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian mountains. While the city suffered extensive damage during the Second World War, the Old Town has been restored, and a forest of skyscrapers has grown up in recent years. Although one of Europe's less visited capitals, Warsaw is changing into a modern and vibrant city.
Getting there
Warsaw Frederick Chopin Airport (+48 22 650 42 20; www.lotnisko-chopina.pl) is the main point of arrival for most visitors; however, both roads and railways link to the rest of Europe. There are two main terminals, while the third — called Etiuda — caters to budget airlines. New arrivals should avoid taxi touts and beware of pickpockets on the 175 bus, which runs to the city centre and main railway station.
Weather
Warsaw enjoys a continental climate, so expect cold winters with frequent snow, while summers are pleasantly warm. Average summer temperatures range between 9°C and 22°C, while December and January may see the mercury fall as low as -10°C. July is the wettest month, with up to 77mm of rain.
