The only city in the world to span two continents, Istanbul – at times utterly European, yet often fascinatingly Asian – has no equal. Its blend of history and culture is simply magnificent, and few visitors fail to take Istanbul into their hearts.
Getting there
Istanbul is truly an international hub, boasting air, sea, rail and road connections. Ataturk Airport (90 212 465 5555; www.ataturkairport.com) lies some 20 kilometres west of the city centre, with flights to Europe, the Middle East and the rest of the world. Trains (www.tcdd.gov.tr) to Asia depart from the station at Sirkeci , and to Europe from Haydarpasa. The main international bus terminus is at Esenler Otogar, while ferries dock at the Karakoy Port.
Weather
Istanbul enjoys four fairly distinct seasons. In summer it is often hot and humid, with the temperature averaging 28゚C. During winter, it is cold (2゚C) and wet (up to 120mm), and a heavy snowfall or two is not uncommon. Istanbul also tends to be fairly windy.

Business and Finance
While Ankara may be Turkey's capital, Istanbul is the place for business. The economy is looking healthy, (the textile and clothing industries are particularly strong), with prospective EU membership, annual GNP growth exceeding six per cent, and – since May 2006 – oil flowing through a new pipeline from Baku to Ceyhan via Tblisi.
